Biographical history
Katy Madsen (nee Catherine Reed) was born in Palo Alto, California. She graduated in botanical and physical sciences, and developed an interest in ecology, natural history, and portrait and landscape painting. In 1964, she moved to Summerland, B.C., and became involved in environmental campaigns in the Okanagan region concerning Brent Mountain, Spotted Lake, and uranium mining. She was a founding director of the Sierra Club of B.C., 1969; a Director of Pacific N.W. Chapter of the Sierra Club, 1970-72; and an active member of the South Okanagan Club on B.C. Nature Council, and the Okanagan-Similkameen Parks Society. In 1982, she returned to painting portraits and landscapes, and moved to Victoria in 1993.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of correspondence, reports, clippings, photographs and hand-drawn maps that document Madsen's involvement in various environmental campaigns in the Okanagan region. Campaigns include: Bodega Head, 1962; Brent Mountain, 1961-92; Spotted Lake, 1978-89; Trout Creek, 1972-93; and Uranium, 1971-95. The fonds also includes several files on the Sierra Club, 1971-83; and the Okanagan Similkameen Parks Society, 1966-69; and 4 chalk drawings of landscapes.
