Biographical history

The first Land Registry Office in Prince Rupert was built in 1908 and stood on the corner of Second Ave. and Fourth Street beside two other Provincial Government buildings. The Provincial offices were previously located in Port Simpson. Fire destroyed the Registry Office in November 1911 but all the records were saved. The new Courthouse was officially opened by Thomas Patullo on January 23, 1923, and housed the Land Registry Office until 1993, when it moved to Third Avenue and finally Prince George in 1997. The office covered land transactions for Cassiar district, Coast Range 3, 4 and 5 which includes Smithers, Burns Lake down to Bella Bella.
