Biographical history
Originally named East Pictou Local Council of Women, this local branch of the National Council of Women of Canada was formed on 26 May 1899 at New Glasgow, N.S. by representatives of various religious and philanthropic societies of Westville, Stellarton, Trenton and New Glasgow. The branch changed its name in 1930 to New Glasgow Local Council of Women when Stellarton and Westville formed their own councils. The purpose of the council is to improve social and economic conditions for women, families, and communities through lobbying, fundraising, establishing study committees, and providing educational courses and training. In its early years, the council concentrated on organizing welfare work, domestic science training, and war relief. It also participated in the establishment of a home for delinquent girls and a training school at Truro.
