Biographical history
From their arrival in 1858 until the Twentieth Century, the functions of the Local Superior were carried out by the Mere Vicariale and after 1891, the Provincial Superior. The Local Superior office was not officially made separate from the Provincial Superior until 1902, when new houses were opening elsewhere and it became necessary to re-assign the house-related duties of the Provincial Superior. The local Superior was both the temporal and spiritual head of her house and directed its functions with the aid of her appointed Council. In 1970, the name "local superior" was dropped in favour of "Coordinator." The title of "Principal" was also attributed to the Local Superior in reference to her function as head of school at St. Ann's Academy until this function and title were passed to a separate individual in late 1967. The office of Coordinator continued until the closing of the house in 1974. Sisters who held the office of Local Superior/Coordinator included: Sister Mary de l'Ange Guardian, 1902-1904; Sister Mary de Loretto, 1904-1907; Sister Mary Lucia, 1907-1909; Sister Mary Marguerite du Sacre Coeur, 1909-1912; Sister Mary Leopoldine, 1912-1914; Sister Mary du Bon Pasteur, 1914-1917; Sister Mary Mildred, 1917-1923; Sister Mary Edith, 1923-1926; Sister Mary Hilda, 1926-1932; Sister Mary Mark, 1932-1934; Sister Mary Rose Alma, 1934-1935; Sister Mary Francois-de-Jesus, 1935-1941; Sister Mary Ludovic, 1941-1947; Sister Mary Eleanor Marie, 1947-1950; Sister Mary Luca, 1950-1953; Sister Mary Velma, 1953-1956; Sister Mary Gladys, 1956-1959; Sister Monica Marie, 1959-1962; Sister Mary Monnina, 1962-1965; Sister Damian Marie, 1965-1967; Sister Helen Worth, 1967-1968; Sister Frieda Raab, 1968-1971; Sister Mary Luca, 1971-1974.
Custodial history
Some series were held by the Local Superior until the closure of the Academy in 1974 and then transferred to the archives, while other series were transferred to the custody of the Prefect of Studies for her use before being transferred to the archives.
Scope and content
The sous-fonds consists of six series of textual records. These include the house chronicles, local council minutes, school register, permanent record cards, school alumnae material, and miscellaneous material. These arose from the Superior's role as head of school and the need to keep records about students and their academic status. They were also generated by her role as house leader and the head of its council.
