Correspondence often refers to the political and economic conditions of Cape Breton. Some records of Thomas Murray and Co. are included with Smith's records. Presumably Smith took over the business of Thomas Murray and Co. ca. 1882. One account book from a general store in Port Hood operated by Smith is also included.
