Biographical history
Marianus (or Mari Anus) Cuming (1813-1859) came to New Brunswick from Scotland in 1853 expecting to become the head of a government-supported veterinary college. The college was not established, and he opened a veterinary practice in Saint John. In 1853 he was sent by the government of New Brunswick to England to purchase stud horses for the province. He continued to write articles on agricultural subjects for periodicals in Scotland and such magazines and newspapers as "The Country Gentleman," "Maine Farmer," and the "New York Tribune". In 1857 he was editor of the "Saint John Courier", and at the time of his death he was also the station master at Rothesay.
