Biographical history
Marshall Bray was born in Ontario. He came west during the gold rush and lived in the Cariboo before settling in Nanaimo in 1876. He was appointed government agent in 1880. He married Sarah Randle in 1883 and had two sons: Harry, who became a Rhodes scholar, and William.

The fonds consists of official commissions as government agent and police magistrate (1909); marriage certificates and childrens' report card and certificates; business correspondence concerning real estate (1892-1899); and letters of administration and estate administration papers for miners who died intestate in an explosion at the Wellington Mine in 1884, including John Lowry, Martin Lowry, Henry Arnold, Barney McGinnes, John Winders, and Domenico Ricono.
