Biographical history

Mary Macdonald attended Summer School for Teachers in Victoria B.C. during the summer of 1919. During the summer course, Mary boarded with Clara Maitland. Teachers could up-grade their qualifications by taking courses at the Summer School for Teachers, held annually in Victoria from 1914-1956. The Summer School was under the auspices of the Provincial Normal School.

Custodial history

Mary Macdonald gave the notebook to her classmate, Clara Maitland. Claras daughter donated it to the BC Archives, who transferred it to the University of Victoria in 2002.

Scope and content

The notebook consists of lecture notes for a Household Science course taken at the Summer School for Teachers, Victoria B.C. The notebook includes detailed notes about sewing, including sample patterns and embroidery samples; and notes on cookery, housewifery and cleaning, including several basic recipes.
