Biographical history
During the 2004 Stanley Cup playoffs, when the Calgary Flames hockey team made it into the finals, local celebrations in Calgary, Alberta were held on a stretch of 17th Avenue SW which became known as the "Red Mile", red being the colour of the Flames' jerseys. Thousands of fans gathered for generally non-violent partying, which featured a large number of women flaunting social convention by baring their breasts. Mary Valentich, Professor Emeritus of Social Work at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, interviewed many of these women and later presented her findings to various academic conferences.
