Biographical history
McLeod Stewart (1847-1926) was a lawyer and author, who also served as the mayor of Ottawa, Ontario from 1887 to 1888.
McLeod Stewart was born in Bytown, now Ottawa, Ontario in 1847, the eldest son of William Stewart, who represented the County of Russell for several years in the Legislative Assembly of United Canada. McLeod Stewart was educated at the University of Toronto (B.A., 1867; M.A., 1870) and was called to the Ontario bar in 1870. Stewart had a flourishing law practice in Ottawa, and also held many public offices, including president of St. Andrew's Society, director of the Metropolitan Street Railway and president of the Canada Atlantic Railway Co., to name only a few. He also served as the mayor of Ottawa from 1887 to 1888.
In his later years, Stewart focussed some of his energies on writing and produced several publications, including "Ottawa an ocean port" (Ottawa, 1893), "Fifty years of the Ottawa Board of Trade" (Ottawa, 1908) and "The first half-century of Ottawa" (Ottawa, 1910).
Stewart died at Ottawa on 9 October 1926.
Custodial history
Scope and content
Fonds consists of manuscript chapters for a book on Ottawa written by McLeod Stewart. The manuscript was probably published as, "The first half century of Ottawa" by Esdale Press in 1910. The manuscript is organized by chapters, and there is sometimes more than one version of a particular chapter. Topics covered include: water power, the Morrisburg & Ottawa Electric Railway, the police and fire departments, the G.T.R. central station, the Y.W.C.A., the Chateau Laurier, the fire alarm telegraph system, journalism in Bytown and Ottawa, and the Lady Grey Hospital, amongst others.
Fonds also includes two letters received by Stewart. The letters are dated 27 April 1911 and 17 May 1911 and refer to Stewart's recently published book, "The first half century of Ottawa."
Fonds also includes approximately fifty pictures showing scenes and buildings in Ottawa and vicinity, which were clipped out of magazines or other publications. There are photogaphs and some drawings and most of the images are photo engravings. Some of the images have cut-lines describing the scene, and others do not.
