Biographical history

From the 1920s to the 1980s the City of Calgary gradually amassed a collection of artworks that were occasionally displayed in a variety of institutions. In 1982 the non-profit Calgary Contemporary Arts Society was established to search for a home for the collection. With the building of a new city hall in the mid-1980s the Society made an agreement with the City for gallery space and in 1988 the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts was opened, operated by the Society. Over the years the gallery created many exhibitions of contemporary work, as well as operating an art rental and sales program. In 2012 the name was changed to the Museum of Contemporary Art Calgary (MOCA); in 2013 it merged with the Art Gallery of Calgary and the Institute for Modern and Contemporary Art to form Contemporary Calgary.
