Andrew Nikiforuk, 1955- , is a Canadian journalist who has specialized in energy, economics and the west for many Canadian publications including The Walrus, Maclean's, Canadian Business, The Globe and Mail's Report on Business, Chatelaine, and others. He wrote two series for the Calgary Herald in the 1990s on the social and ecological impacts of feedlots and the legacy of northern uranium mining. He also wrote public policy papers for the Munk Centre on water diversion in the Great Lakes (2004) and water, energy and North American integration (2007). Nikiforuk has won numerous awards for his work since 1989 and his book on Weibo Ludwig won the Governor-General's Award for Non-Fiction in 2002. He is also the recipient of the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award from the Society of Environmental Journalists. He is the author or editor of many books including Running on Empty : Alberta After the Boom (1987), The Fourth Horseman : A short history of epidemics, plagues, famine and other scourges (1991), School's Out : The catastrophe in public education and what we can do about it (1993), Saboteurs : Wiebo Ludwig's war against big oil (2001), Pandemonium : Bird flu, mad cow disease and other biological plagues of the 21st century (2006), Tar Sands : Dirty oil and the future of a continent (2008), Empire of the Beetle : How human folly and a tiny bug are killing North America's great forests (2011), and The Energy of Slaves : Oil and the new servitude (2012). He and his wife have three sons, Aiden, Keegan and Torin.
