History

The Powell River Historical Museum and Archives Association was established in 1962 and began operations of the Powell River Historical Museum and Archives in its present facility in 1967. The Museum and Archives acquires artifacts, archives, and historical reference material relating to Powell River and an area from Jervis Inlet to Desolation Sound, including Texada, Lasqueti, and Savary Islands.

The mandate of the Powell River Historical Museum Archives is to acquire, preserve and make available to the public records of enduring value to the District of Powell River, including the area from Saltery Bay to Lund as well as Nelson, Hardy, Texada, Harwood, Savary and Hernando Islands. The Archives' holdings include records of individuals, families, organizations, and local government bodies which reflect the social, political and economic life of Powell River and area. The Archives also acquires visual records, maps, plans, drawings, sound recordings, and published reference material pertaining to the history of Powell River and area.
