Biographical history

R.M. (Robert McCahon) Dickey, an Irish/Canadian Presbyterian minister, arrived in Skagway, Alaska on October 9, 1897. Dickey was sent to the Klondike in his second year of Theology at Manitoba College. Enroute to the north he was ordained at Vancouver, and the day after his arrival in Skagway he preached the first Presbyterian service, in the area, at Burkhart Hall. While in Skagway Reverend Dickey helped build a Union Church - involving the Episcopalian, Baptist, Native Christian Church, Methodist and Presbyterian communities. Reverend Dickey is also recognized for seeking trained nurses and other medical personnel for the local hospital. On April 1, 1898 he left Skagway for Bennett, and Dawson City and the Klondike Gold Fields. Reverend Dickey left the north in August 1899. For many years, 1900-1913, he delivered lectures, highlighted with magic lantern slides, on the Klondike Gold Rush.

Custodial history

Donated by Emily Zimmerman, possibly a relative of Reverend Dickey's.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the original personal diary of Reverend R.M. Dickey from August 1897 to October 1899. It describes his daily activities, including encounters with Soapy Smith while in Skagway, Alaska. It also describes his trip to Bennett over the White Pass Trail and down the Yukon River to Dawson City and his final destination, the Klondike Gold Fields. The diary is interspersed with newsclippings from the local paper in Skagway. Also included is a flyer advertising an illustrated lecture, 1912, by Rev. Dickey, "Pionerring with the Gold Seekers of the Klondyke".
