Biographical history

Ray Williston served as member of the Legislative Assembly for Prince George form 1953-1972. He was Minister of Education from 1954 to 1956 and Minister of Lands and Forests from 1956 to 1972 in the British Columbia Social Credit government under W.A.C. Bennett. Mr. Williston encouraged the development of a pulp economy from unused forest resources in the interior of British Columbia in conjunction with government hydro-electric projects. After leaving government he became Chair and President of the British Columbia Cellulose Company. Mr. Williston also held a number of directorships in British Columbia and New Brunswick and did consulting work for the Canadian International Development Agency and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Williston Lake is named after him.

The fonds consists of photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera relating to Ray Williston's life from childhood to recent times, one interview on audio cassette, correspondence and reports relating to Mr. Williston's government and private work, and miscellaneous textual material.
