Historique

The Red Deer and District Archives assembled the Douglas Cardinal collection from various sources in 1989-1998. Douglas Cardinal, 1934- , was born in Red Deer, Alberta of Blackfoot and Métis ancestry. He studied architecture at the University of British Columbia and the University of Texas, and established an architectural practice in Edmonton. His notable architectural projects included St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Red Deer (1967), Edmonton Space Sciences Centre (1983), Canadian Museum of Civilization (1983), and the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C. (in progress, 1998)

Its collections relate primarily to the City of Red Deer and its immediate vicinity in Central Alberta. The Archives also holds records for several other public bodies and institutions, as well as numerous organizations, associations, churches, cemeteries, businesses, unions, cooperatives, lodges and clubs. The Red Deer and District Archives has placed a strong emphasis on genealogical information and research. It maintains an extensive set of biographical files on local families and residents. Space is also provided for the branch library of the Alberta Genealogical Society.
