Biographical history
Robert McDonald was born in Manitoba in 1829. He was a missionary with the Anglican Church. In 1862 he was sent to work at Fort Yukon, at the request of Reverend Kirkby of Fort Simpson who had visited Fort Yukon in 1861. He had originally intended to stay in the North for only two years, however he soon became caught up in the challenges of his frontier mission and spent the next forty years preaching, teaching and writing in Northern Alaska, Yukon and the Mackenzie Delta area. McDonald studied the Takudh (Loucheux) language assisted by his wife, Julia Kutug, who would sound out the syllables until he could understand them phonetically. From this he composed a written form of the language, into which he translated the Bible, Prayer Book and hymns, as well as a dictionary.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of a microfilm copy of the journals kept by Archdeacon Robert McDonald during his service in the Yukon and NWT. There are also two typewritten transcripts of Archdeacon McDonald's journals. One is only a partial transcript of Journal #8 and the other transcript is complete. Both were typed from the microfilm of his journals by the Yukon Native Language Centre, ca. 1984. The journals cover the years 1862-1912, the years 1884-1886 and 1905-1906 are missing (85/97). Also accompanying the journals is McDonald's life story as recorded by Reverend T.G.A. Wright and Bishop Stringer, during sessions of General Synod in London, Sept. 6-14, 1911 (79/3).
