The autobiographies of Yuko Maki (1948) (000.36.02) and Yukio Mita (1956) (000.36.01) were a gift of Mr. Tsuguyasu Itami, given to Robert Sanford to donate to the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of primarily textual material, most of which are published. These publications have been written and or edited by Sanford and include the following topics: The Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies (1923-1998); The History of Mountaineering in Canada; the Year of the Great Bear; Hans Schwarz; the Mountains of Canada; mountain climbing; Canada's elite national park mountain rescue service; the fonds also includes a transcript of a telephone interview with Willy Pfisterer. Also included in the fonds are two videocassettes containing historic images of early Jasper, including the social and natural history of unique locations within Jasper, Banff, and Yoho National Parks. The fonds also records pertaining to the first ascent of Mount Alberta by the Japanese Alpine Club (1925) (000.36.01); photographs taken during the Japanese Alpine Club's first ascent and of the club members; and of newspaper clippings regarding their success. Also included are the published autobiographies Yuko Maki and Yukio Mita who were among the Japanese members who were part of the 1925 expedition; a Japanese text book that references the historic ascent of the Japanese Alpine Club. The fonds also a collection of copies of the trapping diaries of Donald 'Curly' Phillips; correspondence between Phillips and Dr. J.M. Thorington including letters written between Thorington and Bert Wilkins, after the death of Phillips; a microfilm reel of Phillips' diaries. Also included are copies of correspondence between Thorington and Conrad Kain (000.36.02)
