Biographical history
Roy Kenzie Kiyooka (January 18, 1926 January 8, 1994) was an influential Canadian photographer, poet and artist of national and international acclaim. A Nisei or second generation Japanese Canadian, Kiyooka was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and raised in Calgary, Alberta. In 1942, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he and his family were uprooted and interned. Kiyooka studied at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Art, and first made a name for himself as painter. He taught in Halifax at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and in 1973 he was hired as an instructor of painting at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Fine Arts. During this period, his work turned increasingly away from painting to other forms of visual and performing arts, and to writing. His book, <em>Pear Tree Pomes</em>, was nominated for the 1987 Governor General's Award. In 1978, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Custodial history
The fonds was transferred to the Catriona Jeffries Gallery by Kiyooka's daughters. The gallery inventoried the material and pulled those items that were considered formal artworks. The remainder of the material was then transferred to the Archives of the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery in 2002. A further accrual of publications and photographic materials was transferred to the Belkin from the Catriona Jeffries Gallery in 2003.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of material created and accumulated by Roy Kiyooka over his artistic career, and includes photographs, prints, publications, artworks given to him by friends, cards and posters. The photographic material shot by Kiyooka covers a span of over three decades and is predominantly source material and personal photographs. None of the material in the fonds was used or should be considered as finished artworks, although similar images were incorporated into Kiyooka's artwork. The photographic materials are in a wide variety of photographic media and dimensions, including colour and black and white prints of various sizes, 35mm negative strips, contact sheets, slides, transparencies and other formats. The fonds also includes a small number of prints (possibly lithographs, and 1 etching) and photographs that appear to be gifts from friends and acquaintances. Also included are catalogues and other publications that are by or about Kiyooka, and exhibition catalogues relating to Vancouver and BC artists. The fonds is divided into the following categories: photographic material shot by Kiyooka, other work by Kiyooka, publications by or about Kiyooka, other catalogues, artworks other artists, and posters/prints.
