During the colonial period, the Commanding Royal Engineer stationed at Halifax, reported to the Commanding Officer of the Nova Scotia Command, which included New Brunswick. During the War of 1812 Captain G. Nicolls was commander of the Royal Engineers in Halifax and Captain J. Maclauchlan commanded the Royal Engineers in New Brunswick. The engineers were responsible for making and maintaining fortifications and other defences and the construction of military roads.

Custodial history

The records of the British forces stationed in Canada, dating from 1759 to 1906, were acquired from the British military headquarters in Canada in 1873 and 1904 by the National Archives of Canada.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of photocopies of correspondence between Captain G. Nicolls and Captain J. Maclauchlan. The letters discuss the availability and suitability of vessels on the St. John River in New Brunswick for use as gunboats and troop transports in case of action against the Americans during the War of 1812. Detailed specifications of the costs and designs for modifying existing vessels are included.
