Biographical history
Arthur Savell Grigsby (1887- 1947) was born in London, England and worked as a clerk at the British Board of Trade, and later with the Great Northern Railway. He served on the Royal Horse Artillery in the First World War and in the Royal Flying Corps. He was involved in businesses in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and an accountant and salesman in Japan and Korea. He moved to Vancouver in 1931.
Grigsby began his 16 years at the Vancouver Art Gallery as Business Manager for the Vancouver Art Gallery in February, 1932. In 1935, he was employed full time with the title Secretary Treasurer. The title was changed to Curator in 1942. He held this position until his death on May 17, 1947. During Grigsby’s appointment at the VAG, the staff consisted of three people: Grigsby, a secretary, and the caretaker, Tommy Slater. Therefore, Grigsby was involved in all aspects of the operations of the Vancouver Art Gallery. He died suddenly in 1947. At the time of Grigsby’s death, T.W.B. London was appointed Acting Curator.
Custodial history
Scope and content
All aspects of the Gallery’s activities are represented in the records, which are primarily textual, but include some photographs and reproductions (University Prints). Some of the records were created under the directorship of T.W.B. London and Gerald H. Tyler. This was the order in which the records were found in 1996.
The sous-fonds consists of the following series: general correspondence, exhibitions, finances, membership, personnel; visit and receptions, acquisitions and sales (sales and purchases of works of art); boards and committees; building and maintenance; associations; and education.
