The Salt Lake Park Board was formed in 1977 to investigate the potential of renewing the Salt Lake area as a recreation site and to determine public interest in seeing the park re-established. Salt Lake had been a popular recreation destination in the early days of Prince Rupert where residents travelled across the harbour to picnic, swim, stay in cabins, and skate in the winter. A provincial park was established there in 1925. Interest in the area diminished after the highway to Terrace was built during the Second World War and other parks were established east of Prince Rupert. Renewed interest in Salt Lakes was shown in the 1960s by the Kinsmen who put money and effort into rebuilding the park. In the 1970s the Skeena Queen Charlotte Regional District's recreation committee reopened the investigation of public interest and the Salt Lake Park Board was formed as a result. By the mid 1980s interest had died down and today the area is no longer a park as it has been reverted to crown land.
