Biographical history
Henry Norman Sheppard, 1861-1934, was born at Kilnhurst, England, the son of a Church of England minister. After working for three years on a cattle and sheep station in Australia, in 1887 he settled in the High River, Alberta district. Soon after, he married Isabella Beatrice "Bee" Godden, 1859-1913. He was a rancher, and later was appointed Justice of the Peace for High River. He served as a town councilor, school trustee, hospital trustee, and briefly as Mayor. The Sheppards had four children who survived infancy: Edmund Norman "Jay", 1889-1917; Henry Fleetwood, 1890-1954; George Evelyn, 1895-1969; and Herbert Campbell "Bert", 1901-1999. Jay died in action at Vimy Ridge. Henry F. spent most of the First World War as a prisoner of war and became a farmer at the site of the Sheppard Family Park in High River. George was a long-time employee of the High River Motor Company. Bert owned or managed several ranches and authored books on the history of the High River district.

Sheppard (1919, 1930-1951), and Bert Sheppard (1938-1942, 1947). Includes a letter from Bee to Henry F. (1913), Henry F.'s military paybooks, discharge papers, and Canadian Legion membership cards. Includes miscellaneous correspondence to Bert (ca. 1953-ca. 1963). Includes photographs of Henry F. and his house, Tongue Creek School, and Bert. The bulk of Bert Sheppard's papers are held by the Stockmen's Memorial Foundation in Cochrane, Alberta. There are no restrictions on access.
