Biographical history
Sir John douglas Hazen was born in Oromocto, New Brunswick, 6 June 1860. His parents were James King Hazen (1836-1878) and Elizabeth Marion Beckwith (b. 1840). J.D. Hazen married Ada Caroline Tibbits, born at Fredericton, on 7 December 1862, the daughter of James and Frances Elizabeth (Long) Tibbits. He had two sons: Douglas King (b. 1885) and James Murray (b.1896); three daughters: Kate Elizabeth (b. 1888); Frances Edith (b. 1890) and Ada Althea (b. 1901).
John Douglas Hazen studied at the Collegiate School, Fredericton and graduated from the University of New Brunswick (B.A., 1879; B.C.L., 1890; and LL.D., 1908). He was called to the Bar in 1883 and practised law in Fredericton and Saint John. John D. Hazen was registrar and treasurer of the University of New Brunswick, 1882-1890 and was also a senator of the University. He had served at various times as Alderman and Mayor of Fredericton. J.D. Hazen was appointed Queen's Counsel of the Earl of Aberdeen in 1894, served as Member of Parliament for Saint John from 1891 to 1896, and as M.L.A. for Sunbury, 1899-1911 then became M.P. once again from 1911. He was Attorney General and Premier of New Brunswick from 1908-1911 and the federal Minister Minister of Marine and Fisheries and Minister of Naval Service from 1911 to 1917. J.D. Hazen was a Member of the Imperial Conference and War Cabinet in 1917 and was Chief Justice of New Brunswick from 1917.
He was knighted (KCMG) in 1918.
J.D. Hazen's home was the Hazen Castle at the head of Hazen Street, Saint John. He received this estate by bequest from Francis Brinley Hazen who had inherited it from Robert Leonard Hazen.
