Biographical history
The Soroptimist Club of Nanaimo was chartered in 1946 as a member of the Soroptimist International Association. As a women's service club, the Soroptimist's goals were to bring together women from many different occupations to participate in community betterment activities and to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace. Long term members included Lena Martin, Dorothy McPhillips, Roma Conroy and Emily Kneen. One of the Club's most significant projects, in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club, was the development of Senior Citizens' Homes in Nanaimo. The club also supported youth and contributed to United Nations' funds. The Soroptimists were famous for their Christmas puddings which were an important fundraiser. The club disbanded in 1973.
Custodial history
After the Nanaimo Soroptimists surrendered their charter, most of the records were given to Lena Martin for safe keeping. The fonds was given to the Archives on behalf of the elderly Mrs. Martin by her niece in December 2001.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of records that document the activities, governance and functions of the club. These include scrapbooks, bank records, correspondence, photographs, bylaws, educational material, Christmas pudding recipes, ceremony instructions, committee reports, membership records and clippings. Although minutes are referred to in these records, their location is unknown. Fonds arranged in seven series: 1) Constitution and bylaws; 2) Club administration records; 3) Financial records; 4) Correspondence; 5) Projects; 6) Photographs and 7) Ephemera.
