Biographical history

While occasional United Church services were held in Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver, as early as 1925, and a Sunday School was organized in 1939, regular services did not begin until 1950, when a congregation began to meet at the Community Hall as Horseshoe Bay United Church. In 1953 a list of charter members was drawn up, and in 1956 property was purchased for a church building. The new church was opened and dedicated as St. Matthew's United Church in September, 1957. It was a small congregation, and finances were difficult. Thus in 1973 St. Matthew's United became a shared ministry with St. Monica's Anglican Church. Initially the two congregations continued separate services, sharing the use of the Anglican priest. Later in 1973, in the spirit of the union discussions taking place between the two denominations, the congregations were amalgamated into the St. Monica's church building, and the congregation became known as St. Monica's Anglican Church, although it remains a shared ministry of the two denominations. In 1973, a Parish Council was formed including members from both the former United Church Official Board, and the Anglican Church Council. A Trustees Board of St. Matthew's United Church continued to 1981, when the St. Matthew's property was sold.
