Biographical history
Stuart Zachary Taylor Wood, 1889-1966, was born in Ontario, the son of Zachary Taylor Wood. After being educated at the Royal Military College, he joined the Royal North West Mounted Police (RNWMP) in 1912. He was appointed Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 1938. He retired in 1951 and died in Ottawa on June 3, 1966. Wood had a keen interest in researching the history of the North West Mounted Police (NWMP), which he pursued during the 1940s and 1950s.
Custodial history
The collection was donated to the Glenbow Archives in 1989 by John Wood, son of Commissioner S.Z.T. Wood. The Walsh family scrapbooks were probably given to the Wood family by the daughter of James Walsh. Microfiche donated to the Yukon Archives by the Glenbow Museum in 1993.
Scope and content
The collection consists of microfiche copies of scrapbooks that include clippings detailing the career of North West Mounted Police (NWMP) Major James Walsh (1843-1905), particularly when Walsh was at Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan and in the Yukon. Walsh joined the NWMP in 1873, was appointed Superintendent of the NWMP and Commissioner of the Yukon in 1897 and retired in 1898.
