Daley family fonds

  • CA PCNSWH MHCA0009
  • Fonds
  • 1909-1999, Photocopied and scanned 2002

The fonds consists of textual materials and photos produced by 3 generations of the Daley family. Four ledgers from Patrick Daley's meat market give a record of his business for several months during 1924-25, 1935, and 1937-8. There is a 4-page account written by Harry Daley in his later years about his military service from 1928-46, papers regarding his discharge, and a copy of his 1909 birth certificate. Most of the family photos appear to have been taken during his married life from1934-1954.

Gerald Daley's papers consist of drafted and printed letters to the editor of the local newspaper, as well as two essays of a religious nature. There are copies of notes from his bible about the extended family and newspaper articles pertaining to family members. During the years 1954-59, when Gerald was a member, he collected articles and photos of the local Sea Cadets. Some 1998 copies of the weekly "Down Memory Lane" section of The Journal-Pioneer show the type of photos and articles selected by Gerald during the 4-month period in which he composed those pages of the paper. An extensive array of photocopied clippings he collected for that work have been loosely arranged by subject. Some children's artwork and 35 photographs were salvaged from the discarded files of the newspaper office.

Other items in this fonds include a 1957 "Emblem" - the Summerside High School magazine, the official program of the 1st annual Summerside Lobster Carnival in 1956, a 1989 PEI Highlanders nominal roll, several 1964 newspapers featuring the Royal Visit, and a 1916 special souvenir edition of the Summerside Journal. There are several items of correspondence and some material about the J. Watson MacNaught family that lived next door to Harry Daley and family.

Historic Summerside 1900-1970

  • CA PCNSWH MHCA0018
  • Collection
  • 2000-2002

This collection contains the materials accumulated by Fred Horne during his research and composition of the book "Historic Summerside 1900-1970". The City of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, honored the millennium year with the initiation of several projects relating to culture and heritage. In the spring of 2000 the Department of Economic Development issued a contract to PEI historian Fred Horne to write a history of Summerside that would describe the changes in the town in the 20th century. An advisory board consisting of Alan Rankin and Faye Pound met with the author over the summer and fall of 2000 and reviewed the early drafts of the book, which was to be called "An Illustrated History of Summerside". Nimbus Publishing Limited of Halifax was chosen as the publisher and it patterned the text and accompanying images to blend with its "Images of the Past" series. The editing process continued through 2001 after Mr. Horne had accepted a position as archivist at the MacNaught History Centre and Archives. The book went to press in early 2002 under the title "Historic Summerside 1900-1970" and was officially launched on Sunday, 9 June 2002.

The collection consists of Horne's handwritten notes made from printed sources and interviews, the typed records of the research plan, progress reports, book outlines and early book drafts, and some correspondence with Nimbus Publishing. The edited book drafts are stored on computer diskettes.

The book's emphasis is on photographs that were collected from Summerside individuals and institutions. The collection contains 751 digital images, over 100 of them from the collection of Donna Sears who inherited the historical photo collection from professional photographer Lorne Read. The Sears photographs are stored separately and contains 111 black and white prints made from negatives, of which 8 have not been scanned. The collection also contains a variety of printed materials that were collected by the author in the course of his work.

Summerside and Area Historical Society fonds

  • CA PCNSWH MHCA0005
  • Fonds
  • 1878-2001

The fonds consists of correspondence, minutes, and papers relating to the formation and operation of the Summerside and Area Historical Society. Included are materials generated by the group in its planning of several historic house tours and the publication of two walking tour brochures in 1985 and 1992. A project using a summer student in 1985 resulted in a sizable collection of photographs being amassed, principally from R. Allan Rankin who had acquired them for his book "Down at the Shore". The photos were arranged into 12 categories and the original order has been maintained with most images falling under the headings of commercial, and individuals and groups. Textual materials were also gathered at that time and later on, mainly on the subjects of fox farming, ship building, Canadian Forces Base Summerside and Holman's Island. There are various handwritten papers on the general history of Summerside and a few specific ones on the history of baseball, the Post Office, the Rotary club, and the Y.M.C.A. There are handwritten notes and photos from the 1994 inventory of heritage homes and the typed bylaw proposal for heritage preservation prepared in 1995. Other items of note include a 1928 booklet "The Island Bred Fox" by B.I. Rayner, the 1909 Holman's catalogue, an original 1878 Panoramic View of Summerside, an undated paper "Record of Ships Built and Registered in PEI 1790-1830" by Preston Ellis, a scrapbook of Barbara McGougan dated 1928-1930, a scrapbook of Lucas R. Allen dated1942-1964, and transcribed newspaper articles about the Summerside Board of Trade from 1910 -1934.
