This collection consists of records regarding Theatre Arts Guild's management and productions from the establishment of the guild in 1931 to 1999. Materials include administrative documents and some financial records, programs, posters, newsletters, histories of Theatre Arts Guild and information about amateur theatre in Halifax, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.

The collection contains a variety of theatre and music programs from across Canada, with a special emphasis on events held in and around Halifax, Nova Scotia. There are also programs from England, United States, France and Russia. Programs date from 1937 to 1986 with a gap between 1941 and 1950.

The fonds consists of records related to Richard Perkyns' research undertaken in writing The Neptune Story: Twenty-Five Years in the Life of a Leading Canadian Theatre and editing Major Plays of the Canadian Theatre 1934-1984 . The fonds also includes a copy of his doctoral thesis, The Impact of the Expressionists Movements on British and American Drama and Theatre Practice (1968) and records which pertain to his involvement with the Halifax Independent Theatre. Records include correspondence, minutes from meetings, research notes, drafts, newspaper clippings, reviews, manuscripts, photographs, and interviews recorded on audio cassettes. The fonds has been arranged in four series: The Neptune Story, Major Plays of the Canadian Theatre, Doctoral Thesis, and Halifax Independent Theatre.

The records in this series comprise rehearsal scripts, research notes, production notebooks, costume and set sketches, performance programs, media reviews, and related correspondence for theatrical productions directed by Linda Moore between 2000-2010.

Among the many regional and national associations and festivals represented are the Canadian Child and Youth Drama Association, Dalhousie University cultural activities, Neptune Theatre, Nova Scotia Cultural Federations, Pier One, Portus Productions, Theatre Arts Guild, Atlantic Drama Festival, Dominion Drama Festival, Joseph Howe Festival, and One Act Play Festival.

This fonds consists of records related to theatre history in Nova Scotia which were collected by Best while researching his M.A. thesis. The fonds includes photographs and negatives of local theatres (including Neptune, the Orpheus, and the Capitol) and various programs, advertisements, and articles related to them. The fonds also includes photocopies of a series of articles Best wrote for the Halifax Mail Star on the history of theatre in Nova Scotia, as well as some other miscellaneous research notes. Photographic materials include 41 negatives and 62 printed photographs.
