History

In April 1999, The Toronto Hospital officially changed its name to University Health Network. Within the Network, each hospital (Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital) retained its identity and base of support as well as their distinct areas of specialization.

The phrase "Health Network" was chosen to signal that as a whole the organization was much greater than the sum of its parts. The word "University" was chosen to represent the organizations primary commitment to research and teaching, as well as its affiliation with the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine.

The Network originally included the Toronto Medical Laboratories, and three foundations: the Arthritis & Autoimmunity Research Centre Foundation (AARC), the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, and the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation. Toronto Rehabilitation Institute also joined UHN effective July 1, 2011.

Administrative structure

The organizational structure of the University Health Network includes both corporate departments, which are completely consolidated, as well as site-specific programs and departments. Physicians, staff, services and resources are grouped into Focus of Care areas and Core Clinical Services. A "Focus of Care" is an area of patient care, research, and education that meets the needs of a specific group of patients.

There are seven program groupings at UHN:
• Krembil Neuroscience Centre (KNC)
• Medical and Community Care (MCC)
• Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (MHA)
• Princess Margaret Hospital Cancer Program (PMHCP)
• Peter Munk Cardiac Centre
• Surgical and Critical Care (SCC)
• Transplantation.

Records management and collecting policies

All administrative records created, captured and managed within University Health Network (UHN) and its predecessor bodies which have been designated as archival in the Records Retention & Disposal Schedule and/or through appraisal by the UHN Archivist and which have been transferred to the archives are made available to staff and the public.

The Corporate Archives does not actively collect patient or health records. The focus of the collection is on administrative records acquired through internal transfer, though on occasion donations of archival material will be accepted if they are from, or relate to, staff or students of one of our hospitals.

Buildings

Holdings

The Archives’ Collection documents the historical development and achievements of our three hospitals, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. In addition to
our current hospitals, records also document our nursing schools, Grace Hospital, Toronto Homeopathic Hospital, the Ontario Cancer Institute, and the work of noted cardiovascular surgeon W.G. Bigelow.

Our records are in a wide variety of formats, including textual documents, photographs and architectural drawings.
