Biographical history

Gordon Fields attended Victoria College from 1929-30, and 1934-35, and graduated from UBC with a BA in 1938. He received an MA in 1949, and a PhD from Stanford University in California. Fields joined the Victoria College Biology Department in 1941, and served as the Chair from 1951-1971. He was a member of the Victoria College Building Committee (1957-63) and the UVic Campus Planning Committee (1963-67), and involved in the planning and construction of UVic's Elliott Building. He was a noted Invertebrate Zoologist, and was Canada's leading authority on squid. He retired in 1978, and died at the age of 74 on 26 January 1986.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of historical notes, student notes, PhD research data on squid and sardines (including photographic data), lecture notes by subject, and course notes; and files from: Victoria College Biology Department (1958-67), Victoria College Building Committee (1957-58), Victoria College Faculty Association (1952-63), Victoria College Board (1957-63), and Victoria College Faculty and Staff Association, (1949-55).
