Biographical history
Buster Hill (August 18, 1911- March 12, 1990) was born Willis Henry Hill in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He moved to Prince Rupert at the the age of three with his parents George [1876-1947] and Eleanor. George opened a shoe store, George Hills & Sons Ltd., at 626 3rd Avenue West in ca. 1916. Buster had five siblings: Trevor, George A., Phylis, Alta and Nora. In Prince Rupert in 1934 he married Jordis Dohl, born April 28, 1913 in Northern Norway. Her family had come to Canada where her father worked in Ontario for the Canadian Pacific Railway and in Prince Rupert for the Canadian National Railway. Buster and Jardis raised Harold, Terry, Michael, Patricia, Carol and Joey. Buster worked as a mechanic, commercial fisherman, truck driver and construction worker before joining the Fire Department in 1939. He became assistant chief in 1949 and retired in 1971.
Custodial history
Buster Hill donated the collection of photographs to the archives on August 14, 1984.
Scope and content
The collection consists of photographs. It includes scenes of people swimming at Salt Lakes, a family photo, a fire truck in the 1920s, lawn bowling at C.N. Park, the government boat "Newington" up on Barret Rock, 16 fishermen in the hold of a boat with a herring catch, armed forces parade on the main street, portraits of J.E. Unwin, Pte. William Booth taken overseas at a camp, Lt. Col. C.W. Peck, 120th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery in 1954 in Prince Rupert, and five postcards.
