Biographical history
Benjamin N. Wales was born in St. Andrews East on April 30, 1851. Son of Letitia Platt Treadwell and Charles Wales (who came to St. Andrews East from Massachusetts to start Canada's first paper mill in 1804), he had seven sisters and three brothers : Elizabeth Blanchard, William B., Margaret Susan, Charles Treadwell, Anna Letitia, Mary Maltbie, Henry Davis, Helen Lucy and Grace Platt. Benjamin Nathaniel Wales maried Emma T. Osgood, the couple had five children : Charles Wellington (died at an early age), Julia Grace (july 14 1881-july 15 1957), Henry 'Osgood' (july 13 1884-july 8 1907), Anna 'Letita' (1887-june 19 1983) and Margaret (april 13 1890-aug. 29 1975). Benjamin N. Wales graduate at McGill's Medicine department in 1874 and married Emma Theodosia Osgood of Sawyerville in october 1878. He worked in Hudson, Thurso, Sayerville and Bury (Eastern Townships) and returned to St. Andrews in 1906. Dr. Benjamin N. Wales was a Liberal and supported Sir Wilfrid Laurier. He contributed to St. Andrews community as senior elder of the United Church St. Andrews, he was Secretary-Treasurer of the Bible Society and a founder of St. Andrews East Boy Scout Troop. Author of "The History of the Seigniory of Argenteuil: The story of its Seigniors and memories of Old St. Andrews" (1934, "Watchman Press"). Dr. Benjamin N. Wales also contributed the column "Memories of Old St. Andrews" in the "Montreal Gazette" and "The Watchman". He was a founding member and president of the History of the Seigniory of Argenteuil (1934- 1936) and researched colonial life in the Ottawa valley. He died june 26, 1938. Biographical sketch written by Tanya Eideguer and Jennifer Crevier Julia Grace Wales : Born on July 14, 1881, Julia Grace Wales died on July 15, 1957. She graduate from McGill's University with the Shakespeare gold medal in 1903. She had a teaching career at the university of Wisconsin, but she his mustly known for her involvement in the peace movement during World War I. As the war in Europe went on, she began to promote a policy of "Continuous Mediation Without Armistice" that became known as the Wisconsin Plan. In 1915 she crossed the Atlantic to attend the Women's Peace Conference at The Hague. The following year she was invited to join the Henry Ford Peace Initiative, and she crossed the ocean again. Working in Sweden for several months, she produced documents and approached diplomats. In fact, these documents were influential in shaping Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points and to the setting up a group of nations intent upon establishing and maintaining peace. Anna Latitia Wales was born on september 1st, 1887. She died at the age of 95 years old on June 19, 1983. Elizabeth Wales was born in Montreal, Quebec, July 13, 1914. Eldest daughter of Charles Stowe Wales and Mabel Bishop, she was educated at St. Andrews s East Consolidated School and the Lachute Academy. She obtained her B.A. degree and High School Teachers Certificate from McGill University in 1935 and taught in Knowlton, Grand'Mère, Montreal and Westmount. The fonds reflects the personal life of some Wales family members : Julia Grace Wales, Letitia Platt Treadwell (1809-1904), Anna Letitia Wales (1849-1930) and her husband David Williamson Morison (1841-1924), Anna Letita 'Tita' Wales (1887-1983), Margaret 'Evelyn' Wales (1890-1975), Charles Stowe Wales and wife Mabel Bishop and their daugther Elizabeth Wales (1914-). Some documents concern Charles Wales & Son's grocery in St. Andrew East and also Benedict, Dewar, Drysdale and Sawyer families. The fonds consists mainly of family correspondence, poems and printings (leaflets, news paper clippings, booklets). There are also draft copies of articles, personal diaries, genealogical trees, financial records (payment slips, fiscal statement, accounts, trustees receipts), deeds, scolarship certificates, diplomas and photographs. One audiotape by Elizabeth Wales about the Treadwell Table completes the fonds.
