Biographical history

The Weslyan Dorcas Society was instituted in Prince Edward Island in January 1844 to "assist the distressed poor of Charlottetown and Royalty by furnishing them with such clothing as they may need... and to minister to their spiritual necessities." The Society was governed by a committee of sixteen women which included the wives of the resident Weslyan ministers. The members solicited donations from city residents and met monthly to make up clothing from the material purchased. Two "visitors" appointed at each meeting would then visit the homes of the poor to deliver the clothing and pray with the families.

Custodial history

These annual reports were deposited in the Legislative Library in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 31 May 1904.
