Il est un trafiquant de fourrures, propriétaire foncier, juge de paix, fonctionnaire, homme politique et officier de milice, né en 1764 à Dunlichty, Écosse, fils de Donald McGillivray et d’Anne McTavish, sœur de Simon McTavish* ; vers 1790, il épousa à la façon du pays une Métisse prénommée Susan, et ils eurent trois fils et une fille, puis le 22 décembre 1800, à Londres, Magdalen McDonald, et de ce mariage naquirent six enfants dont quatre moururent en bas âge ; décédé le 16 octobre 1825 à Londres.
