Biographical history

This is an artificial fonds. The precise administrative units which created much of the oversize material described in this inventory were not recorded when these documents were transferred to the City of Calgary Archives after the completion of the Olympic Winter Games in 1988. Most items were individually rolled and stored together with other oversize, rolled material. An examination of the documents reveals that the oversize plans and maps were most likely produced in the Operations Group, Engineering Department of OCO'88 and are closely related to the records in that series. Other, miscellaneous, items may well have been produced in either the Communications Group or the Team'88 Services Group of OCO'88 and related documents may be found in those records. The oversize planning schedules are related to other planning schedules found in the records of the Finance Group. Various engineering and architectural companies were responsible for producing the majority of the plans described in this inventory and these companies are referred to in the file listings. A number of plans were also produced directly by OCO'88 and have no references to outside engineering or architectural companies on them.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of 3,448 plans, 37 posters, five pieces of art (drawings and sketches), three maps, three oversize aerial photo negatives, and a number of miscellaneous oversize items. Because there is no administrative structure to follow for the organization of these records, they have been grouped into two artificial series, the first consisting of the oversize plans and maps, and the second made up of the posters, aerial photo negatives and other miscellaneous items which did not fit into the first series. The majority of plans have been placed into oversize map folders and map cabinets. A few plans have been placed into one oversize box and some miscellaneous oversize items have been placed onto shelves. Each series has a number of sub series. There are 15 sub series in Series I, arranged by venue. Sub series xiv is made up of plans which were originally bound or grouped together because of the nature of the facility or operation described in the plans rather than by the venue where the construction was taking place.
