Biographical history

Zephirin Malhiot, 1856-1948, was born in Becancour, Lower Canada and educated at Nicolet College, Trois-Riviere Seminary and Richmond College. He worked for several Quebec and Ontario railways as an engineer in the 1870s and 1880s and in 1899 moved to Winnipeg to work for the Manitoba Department of Public Works. He settled in Calgary, Alberta a few years later and the latter part of his life was spent in Alberta. He worked on a variety of engineering projects and promoted the Alberta Hydro Electric Company. In 1887 Malhiot married Domithilde (Tilly) Hart, 1860-1925, and they had seven children, Louis (or Lewis) Hart, 1896-?, Marie Louise Jeanne d'Arc "Joan" (McMahon), 1894-?, Alice Charlotte (Ross), 1890-1968, Alexandra "Aldra" (Venard), 1901-?, Marie Antoinette Wilhelmina "Willa" (Webb), 1903-?, Lewis Zephirin, and Maurice, ?-1912/1913?.

The fonds consists of his memoirs, "Seventy Years of Growth with Canada", relating to the years from 1904 to 1927, and including pages 353 to 667, and chapters 67 to 98.
